You're a teenager...what you should know about cars and driving them

When a teenager gets a driver license, it signifies freedom and the lure of the open road. But with this newfound freedom comes a host of new situations and possible problems that most teen drivers have never encountered before. It's a good idea to review these scenarios with new drivers in your family, and discuss how to handle them before they happen for real.

From traffic stops to road rage, here's a primer on what you need to tell teen drivers as they take to the roads.

1. What to do when you're stopped by a police officer
Safely pull to the side of the road, turn off your car, roll down the window and keep your hands visible. Don't make any sudden moves or argue with the officer. Do your arguing in traffic court.

2. How to deal with a flat tire
Pull completely off the road, even if it means destroying the tire. Call roadside assistance and let that person change the tire. If you have a spare (many cars now only have an inflation kit) and know how to change the tire, make sure you are out of traffic and in plain sight of oncoming traffic before changing it yourself.

3. What to do when the "check engine" light comes on
If there is any change in the car's performance, any mechanical noises, smoke from the tailpipe or electrical smells, stop the car and call for assistance. If there are none of these symptoms, take the car to a dealer and let them diagnose the problem. However, if you just bought gas, the light might just be indicating that the gas cap is loose. Tighten the cap and continue driving. The light should go off on its own.

4. How to deal with a friend who is about to drive under the influence
Don't get in the car. Do anything not to drive with an intoxicated person, and that includes calling your parents for a lift or paying for a taxi. Your next move is to try to prevent your drunken friend from hurting themselves or someone else.

5. How to drive safely while talking on a cell phone
British Columbia bans all cell phone use by drivers, so be sure you know if these provisions apply where you live. If it's permissible to use a cell, always use a hands-free device so you can keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. Learn how to pair your phone with the car's Bluetooth system. Don't even think about texting while driving (no, not even at stoplights).

6. How to buy a new car
Don't just wander onto a dealership's car lot. Instead, contact the Internet Department of several dealerships to get multiple quotes then compare them to the reputation of the specific dealership. Follow up with phone calls to the Internet managers of these dealerships to verify the terms of their offers.

7. What to do after an auto accident
If the car is drivable and there are no serious injuries, turn on your flashers and pull safely out of traffic. Call the police to report the accident. Exchange insurance information with the other driver but refrain from discussing the accident and who is at fault. Make notes and use your cell phone's camera to take pictures of the cars involved.

8. How to get an honest quote for an automotive repair
Search the Web to get an estimate for how much the repair should cost. Search online for garages with high customer ratings and ask friends for recommended garages. Call the garage and ask for a ballpark estimate and let the garage know you are contacting other places for their best quote. Use your intuition to make the final decision on whom to trust.

9. How to drive in rain and snow
Reduce your speed and leave more room between your vehicle and those in front of you. Understand how to handle skids. If possible, practice reacting to skidding in safe conditions, such as a snow-covered empty parking lot. Understand that a car might hydroplane on a rain puddle on the road and learn how to react to driving with reduced traction and visibility.

10. How to avoid road rage situations
Understand the severe consequences to you, your car and your driving record when minor disagreements escalate to life-threatening situations. When someone offends you, take a deep breath and know that your anger will dissolve in minutes. Don't anger other drivers by cutting them off or tailgating. If you've inadvertently angered another driver, don't get drawn into interacting with them. Ignore them or, if necessary, change your route. Finally, repeat this phrase: It's just not worth it.

Before you say..."Deal"...

The excitement of buying a new car is one of the biggest feeling's you'll have in your life time; especially if it's your first new car. But before you go ahead and say "Deal" make sure you know a few things ahead of time. Here are 5 things you should be aware of before you sign on the bottom line:

1) What other fees will be charged?
Up to now, you've probably only been negotiating the price of the car only. You will, of course, be required to pay additional fees, some of which are legitimate and some which might be questionable. Legitimate costs include HST, registration costs and documentation fee. Some dealers, however, tack on additional fees that they invent as a way to build profit into the deal. The sooner you find out these fees, the better you can avoid them. In fact, in BC, dealers must declare the documentation fees on the initial work sheet when negotiating the deal.

2) How much is the documentation fee?
All dealers will charge a documentation fee, or 'DOC' fee, when you buy a car. This fee is supposed to be used to cover off the costs for registrations, lien searches, Car Proof searches, cleaning the car and fuel for the car. There is no set standard for BC, but average amounts should NOT surpass the $400 mark. You will find some dealers initial 'sale price' as lower than it's competition, but they make it back by having an above average DOC fee - we've see amounts as high as $1,200!! You will have to pay a DOC fee, but if it seems outrageous, then it probably is. Either negotiate it down or don't by the car. There are other dealers out there.

3) Are there any aftermarket parts or security devices on the car?
Most cars will come with options installed on the car at the factory as the car is being built. But sometimes, the dealer adds items as a way to boost profits. Popular items are mud flaps, aftermarket alarms, window tint, running boards or the ever popular "paint protection". These are called dealer add-ons and won't be found on the window sticker. Some of these add-ons are quite legitimate and most of the time very useful on your vehicle. But you need to be aware of the price of the items. Ensure that the dealers itemizes these add-ons separate from the price of the car you are negotiating, then before signing, check with their parts and service department on the cost to have these items installed after the fact and if the costs are the same - they should be! As for the paint protection package...if you live in areas where you are close to salt water or salted roads, it's not necessary. Just be sure that you know what has been added on before you say yes.

4) How many kilometers are on the car?
When buying a new car, the car should have like no kilometers on it...right??? Well, not necessarily. Every new vehicle is test driven when it comes off the line at the factory, and is driven a few times from the different ports of landing it goes through to get shipped to the dealers and finally its driven by a technician at the dealership for it's pre-delivery inspection; so every car could in fact, have upto 100 kms on it before it's ever driven by a customer. Then, once on the lots, the car could have one to 20 (or more) test drives adding mileage to the car. Sometimes, the car has also been driven to the dealer from another dealership via a 'dealer trade'. There's no reason to be overly concerned if the new car has upto 1,000 kms on it; after that though, you should try and negotiate a bit of a better deal as the mileage increases. One thing to note though...your warranty will start when you take delivery, so ensure that the paperwork matches the mileage on the car (If it has 1,100 kms on it...make sure the paperwork shows that so the warranty goes until 61,100kms if the base warranty is 60,000kms - for example).

5) Can you deliver the car?
This is a great question for the Internet shoppers out there, but it is also a very loaded question. Your time is very valuable, and it is the job of the sales person to cater to you! If you cannot get away from work or home for what ever reason, a professional car sales person CAN and WILL deliver the car to you! They can bring all the necessary paperwork and the car right to you to sign off and transfer to you. This benefit allows you to continue your day without having to spend 'wasted' time at a dealership. Now...the caveat...you must ensure you have done all your homework on the vehicle you are buying and the dealership you are buying from. Plus, you should have, at some point, driven the vehicle that you are buying before you sign the deal. The ease of the Internet has allowed us to do many things online, and buying stuff sight unseen is very common; just make sure you know all the details above and ensure you are buying the right vehicle YOU want when the sales person shows up with the car and the documents.

After buying a home or condo, a new car purchase is the next biggest purchase you will make in your lifetime. It is a great feeling and you immediately become popular with friends, co-workers and family. Just make sure you know what you are buying, but more importantly, know WHO you are buying it from. The reputation of the dealership is as important, if not more so, than that of the actual car.

January brings about a new year and a new show...car show that is. The North American International Auto Show is held this time every year in Detroit and it's the biggest in North America, and the first opportunity people have at seeing 'what's new'. Plus it's a huge opportunity for each of the major manufacturers to launch their 'concepts' to the journalists.

Here's a quick glimpse of what GM announced this week...

The first vehicle is one that is slated to be in our showroom within a year. It's the all new Buick Encore. Built on an all new platform, the Encore will be Buick's (and GM's) first foray into the very unknown premium small luxury utility market. With very little other entrants in this market, it should be fun to watch how the Encore performs. It's smaller than an Equinox and said to have the same underpinnings as the Chevrolet Sonic.

Next up we have two concepts...The TRU140S and the Code130R. Both are small car entries with a wide range of possibilities. The designs go directly after the youth market and Chevrolet wants to start luring customers in with these potential 'first buys'. Then keep them in the Chevrolet Family as they get older and earn more money (hopefully).

The TRU140S is a front drive small coupe intended for an Italian Exotic feel. The platform for this car is already in production in the form of the Chevrolet Cruze...so it's not that far off from being a reality.

The Code130R is a rear wheel drive 'performance oriented' car that has the same "Alpha Platform" as the Cadillac ATS. Rear wheel drive small performance car...YES PLEASE!

The Auto Show is only two days old and we've already seen 3 amazing new (hopefully) vehicles from GM. Let's hope the rest of the week brings more great news for all of us.

2012...A lot to look forward to

We only have a few days of 2011 left and we're doing everything we can to finish this tough year off on a high note. So if you are in the market for a fantastic deal...now is the time. But we're not here to talk about the past, rather, what lies ahead!

No longer can we complain about an old dingy building, or working out of trailers and dodging front end loaders. We are now officially all back to work in the confines of our newly rebuilt dealership.

You've seen, hopefully, some of the pictures touting all that is new. From our bigger showroom and refurbished customer lounger, the enclosed and temperature controlled Service Drive Thru, and our Parts and Accessory Pro Shop, it's all new! We've really tried to make every experience you have here a comfortable one.

So needless to say, we are all very excited about our new home and will proudly show it off all year.

What about what goes 'inside' this all new showroom...well, we have to talk about some of the new vehicles headed our way.

2011 saw the launch of the Chevrolet Orlando multi passenger vehicle, the Chevrolet Sonic small hatchback and sedan (replacing the outgoing Aveo) and the electrifying Chevrolet Volt. All three vehicles have been fantastic additions to our lineups...but what's next?

We just wanted to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU...

Thank you to the community for being patient with us this year as we've re-built our entire store. It's been a mess, to say the least; but you have kept coming in to get your vehicles services, parts for those vehicles and some of you have even purchased new(er) vehicles. You've put up with dirt, dust, noise and offices being in trailers, yet, you've remaining loyal to the Jenner Family. So thank you West Shore for believing in one of your community businesses.

Thank you to our staff for staying with us this year. It's been a tough year dodging bull dozers and dump trucks and not knowing where to park, let alone where your office was. By staying with us over this last year has meant you believe in us as a family and as a business. We are here to stay and you're right there with us. So thank you, to each of our employees. And we can't forget the families of our employees...you have all stood behind them along this way, so thank you as well.

Thank you to our contractors (Pius and Peter) and all our sub trades for doing such a great job on our new 'Home'. You have all done your jobs, all while still allowing us to do ours. Sure we got in your way a little, and revised a few of the plans along the way, but you did it, and you did it to the best of you ability. So thank you to all those that built our store.

Finally, thank you to all everyone that donated food, clothing and toys for our Christmas Drive. We have been able to fill the back of an Orlando AND and Equinox, and we are now onto our second Orlando; with hopes of filling that too by weeks end. All these donations have gone to the West Shore Food Bank and without question go to individuals and families that truly need them this season. So again, thank you for all the donations.

With 2011 almost done, the future is definitely bright for the West Shore and Jenner Chevrolet Buick GMC. We have been here since 1981, and are now set to be here another 30+ years.

Winter driving...don't let Jack Frost 'snow' you down!

Here we go...slipping and sliding, and I don't mean on a toboggan! I mean in your car! It's that time of season again when safe driving is just that much more critical. A lot of the time, it's Mother Nature that dictates your abilities on the road, but here are a few Winter Driving tips that might come in handy when driving this winter.

Maintain a safe following distance:

It takes longer to stop on a slippery road. Look ahead and keep plenty of distance between you and the other cars (at least 4 seconds)

Drop your speed to match road conditions:

The posted speed is the maximum speed under ideal conditions. In winter, it is safer to drive below the posted speed. No matter how much experience you have, the way your car will move on snow or ice always has an element of unpredictability.

Watch for black ice:

Slow down when approaching icy areas such as shaded areas, bridges and overpasses as these sections of road freeze sooner than others in cold weather. Watch for 'black ice', areas of the road with a thin, almost invisible coating of ice, as it can cause your vehicle to suddenly lose traction, braking and cornering control.

Accelerate and brake slowly:

When starting from a stop on slick roads, start slowly and accelerate gradually to maintain traction and avoid spinning your wheels. When stopping, plan well in advance, apply the brakes gently and slowly add pressure rather than braking suddenly.

Avoid sudden moves:

Slow down and steer smoothly and gradually to avoid skidding. Accelerate gently, turn slowly and brake carefully and early. Avoid unexpected quick movements that could put you in a spin. Anticipate turns, stops and lane changes well before they occur.

Know how to handle a skid:

A skid happens when your wheels slide out of control on a slippery surface and is a result of driving too fast for road conditions. If you start to skid ease off on the brake or accelerator, look and steer smoothly in the direction you want to go. Be careful not to over steer. If you are on ice and skidding in a straight line, step on the clutch or shift into neutral.

See and be seen:

It is critical for drivers to see and be seen in low light conditions, and when blowing snow impairs visibility. Always drive with your headlights on.

Know the weather report:

If you are making a longer journey for the holidays, know the weather reports for the route you are travelling. If you don't have to go out...don't.

Pack up:

Last but not least, make sure that if you do go out, be prepared. Ensure that there are blankets and mitts and toques and other warm clothes with you and all your family members in the car while you are travelling. Also, be sure to take chains if you are travelling on roads that require it. It will never hurt to take these extra items, as you'll be more thank thankful if the time comes and you need them.

The winter season brings forth a great time for families - Christmas, snow ball fights, building snowmen and driving to parties and dinners. Just make sure that you take care while out on the roads so that you can arrive at all these events, safe and sound.

Holiday Season fundraiser

From now until the 23rd of December, we are trying to fill a Chevrolet Orlando full of kids toys, clothes and non-perishable food items so that we can help those who need it most during this Holiday Season.

The Orlando will be in our showroom and once it's filled, we'll drive it down to the Mustard Seed, the Salvation Army and any of the other Charities in need, to drop off all the items donated.

This is a time that we can all help out a little by making a donation today. The Orlando will be in our showroom until the 23rd, from 9am to 6pm Monday thru Saturday.

If you have the time, please help us to donate to those who really need it this Christmas.

What's happening...

So there are a lot of things happening both at Jenner and at General Motors...so much in fact, that we felt it a good idea to share some of those details.

First off, and probably the simpler of the two: Jenner Chevrolet Buick GMC.

We are ALMOST complete the 'rebuild' of our dealership. We've changed the term from a renovation to a rebuild after taking a deeper look into how much time and work we are putting into this construction.

If you haven't been by the store lately, you've definitely missed all the changes. When you drive in now, you'll immediately notice that our entrance has completely changed. Yeah, it's still gravel and not finished yet, but we've added so much fill to the front that when you pull in, you're pretty much at showroom height!

The service drive through is almost complete. The doors are up now and it's starting to look like a real building!

The tiling in the showroom is ongoing and the offices are up and ready.

Yes, there's a lot more happening at the store, but I think it's best you come on in and have a look for yourself...we'll be more than happy to give you a tour!

We just finished a bog off site sale in Sidney and wanted to thank everyone at the Mary Winspear Center in Sidney for all their help and support. Plus, all the people of Sidney for coming out and supporting our sale. Thank you!

Over at General Motors...well, things are still happening very quickly! We were at dealer meetings in Toronto recently and got some good glimpses into what's coming in the near future.

Just launching to dealers now are the all new Chevrolet Sonic and Chevrolet Orlando. The Sonic replaces the old Aveo, but in the process, has 'grown up'. It's bigger than the previous Aveo, and offers many more features, safety advances and its fit and finish is greatly improved. The Orlando doesn't really 'replace' anything, but it now gives us a multi passenger vehicle (seven passenger) in a compact design. There really isn't much out there that it can be compared to, other than the Mazda 5, so it will be very exciting to see all the new customers coming in to check out the Orlando.

We did get to see three vehicles though that aren't at dealerships yet, but are very close. The all new Chevrolet Malibu, the Buick Verano and the Chevrolet Spark are all just about to begin production and start landing.

They teased us with photos of the upcoming all new Chevrolet Impala and Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra full size pick ups. The full sized pickup sneak peaks looked AMAZING and we can't wait for them to give the green light on this and start showing us the real thing.

The upcoming Camaro ZL1 was there too, but 'off limits' to us...too bad cause I think you would have had line ups around the block if they let us take it for a test drive!

Finally, and this news has just been released, that the Chevrolet Colorado 'global' truck has been green lighted for North America. YES!!!

So you can see that even in this 'shortened' blog, there are many things happening today and tomorrow for all you Jenner and GM fans. Stay tuned as we will definitely keep you informed as we get more info...and the dates of our 'Grand Re-Opening' of Jenner 2.0!

Preventative Maintenance

Preventative maintenance helps keep your car on the road longer. Whether your vehicles is used strictly for commuting, as a mobile office or for personal entertainment, following a regular maintenance schedule is essential for safe, trouble free operation and avoiding costly and unplanned repairs.

Let's look at a few keys areas to keep a close eye on with your vehicle:

Check Your Tires
Proper tire maintenance can extend the life of your tires, improve fuel efficiency and help ensure your safety. On a monthly basis you should be performing the
following three checks:

1) Ensure all 4 tires are adequately inflated. There's a sticker on the driver's door that tells you the proper inflation data for your specific vehicle.

2) Check the tread depth of your tires (we recommend using the penny method to check - place a penny in the tire's groove with the Queen's head facing down; if you can see the top of the crown, change your tires).

3) Make sure your tires are free of cracks and foreign objects. Nails and screws love to hide in the sneakiest places.

Lastly, remember that you should be rotating your tires every other oil change (depending on your oil change frequency) or every 10,000 kms.

Check Your Wipers and Lights

Clear visibility is essential for avoiding dangers on the road, and your vehicle's wiper and lighting systems play an important role in your safety. Keep your vision clear by checking your wiper blades every six months and replacing them annually. With your headlights, make sure that they are working in both high and low beam settings, and that all signal lights, back up lights and most importantly, your brake lights are also all functioning properly.

Check Fluid Levels

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine, providing lubrication, protection and cooling to all of the internal components. You can see earlier Blogs of ours sharing the importance of changing your oil and which oils are best. Oil should be checked regularly and topped off as needed. Oil should be changed every 5,000kms or as directed by your Oil Life monitor.

Check Your Brakes

Your brake system is THE most important safety system on your vehicle, and should be inspected when you rotate your tires; or every 10,000kms. If you notice a decrease in braking performance, pulsating brake pedal, warning light or scraping, squealing or grinding noise, your brakes should be serviced right away.

Check Your Battery

The battery us a critical component of your vehicle's starting and charging system. Regular maintenance will help to ensure dependable hassle free starting. The battery and cable connections should also be cleaned and checked for loose connections. Again, your battery should be checked each time you change your oil.

Check Your Engine

A 'check engine light', poor fuel mileage or rough running engine is an indication that a tune up might be required. A routine tune up is essential for optimum performance, fuel economy and reduced emissions. Over time, air and fuel filters may become blocked with dirt and debris, potentially impacting fuel economy and performance. Most vehicles now, need a tune up every 100,000kms depending on driving conditions and climates.

You want to make sure that you take care of your vehicle as most of you depend on it's daily capabilities; and no one likes to be stranded on the side of the road from a breakdown. Especially if it's something that could have been prevented.

Keep an eye on these simple items and be sure to maintain your vehicle as needed, and your vehicle will take care of you for years to come.

The History of the Chevrolet "Bow Tie"

Globally recognized today, the Chevrolet bowtie logo was introduced by company co-founder William C. Durant in late 1913. But how it came to be synonymous with the brand is open to wide interpretation.

Durant’s version of how the logo came into existence is well known. The long-accepted story, confirmed by Durant himself, was that it was inspired by the wallpaper design in a Parisian hotel.

According to The Chevrolet Story of 1961, an official company publication issued in celebration of Chevrolet’s 50th anniversary:

“It originated in Durant’s imagination when, as a world traveler in 1908, he saw the pattern marching off into infinity as a design on wallpaper in a French hotel. He tore off a piece of the wallpaper and kept it to show friends, with the thought that it would make a good nameplate for a car.”

However, conflicting accounts have emerged, each of which is plausible enough to deepen the mystery and suggest it may never be solved. Two of the alternate origins come from within the Durant family itself.

In 1929, Durant’s daughter, Margery, published a book entitled, My Father. In it, she told how Durant sometimes doodled nameplate designs on pieces of paper at the dinner table. “I think it was between the soup and the fried chicken one night that he sketched out the design that is used on the Chevrolet car to this day,” she wrote.
More than half a century later, another Bowtie origin was recounted in a 1986 issue of Chevrolet Pro Management Magazine based on a 13-year-old interview with Durant’s widow, Catherine. She recalled how she and her husband were on holiday in Hot Springs, Va., in 1912. While reading a newspaper in their hotel room, Durant spotted a design and exclaimed, “I think this would be a very good emblem for the Chevrolet.” Unfortunately, at the time, Mrs. Durant didn’t clarify what the motif was or how it was used.

That nugget of information inspired Ken Kaufmann, historian and editor of The Chevrolet Review, to search out its validity. In a Nov. 12, 1911 edition of The Constitution newspaper, published in Atlanta, an advertisement appeared from by the Southern Compressed Coal Company for “Coalettes,” a refined fuel product for fires. The Coalettes logo, as published in the ad, had a slanted bowtie form, very similar to the shape that would soon become the Chevrolet icon. Did Durant and his wife see the same ad – or one similar – the following year a few states to the north? The date of the paper was just nine days after the incorporation of the Chevrolet Motor Co.

One other explanation attributes the design to a stylized version of the cross of the Swiss flag. Louis Chevrolet was born in Switzerland at La Chaux-de-Fonds, Canton of Neuchâtel, to French parents, on Christmas Day 1878.

Whichever origin is true, within a few years, the bowtie would emerge as the definitive Chevrolet logo. An October 2, 1913 edition of The Washington Post seems, so far, to be the earliest known example of the symbol being used to advertise the brand. “Look for this nameplate” the ad proclaims above the emblem. Customers the world over have been doing so ever since.

Many variations in coloring and detail of the Chevrolet bowtie have come and gone over the decades since its introduction in late 1913, but the essential shape has never changed. In 2004, Chevrolet began to phase in the gold bowtie that today serves as the brand identity for all of its cars and trucks marketed globally. The move reinforced the strength of what was already one of the most-recognized automotive emblems in the world. More than 4.25 million Chevrolets were sold in more than 120 countries and regions during 2010.

2012 Chevrolet Volt

Well, the wait is just about over. September 1st, 2011 is the official launch day for the 2012 Chevrolet Volt in Canada. GM has confirmed with us that we WILL have the Volt here on that day. Victoria has been selected as only one of seven cities across Canada to get the initial launch product of this electric/gas vehicle.

Only being available in select cities is one thing, but each of those cities has a limited number of dealers with a limited number of inventory available to the public. This should lead to a very fast sell out of the initial wave of Volt's into Canada/BC/Victoria.

We know that Victoria will only see SIX 2012 Chevrolet Volt's for the first wave of the launch. Once GM begins filling the second wave of cities and dealers across Canada, it is uncertain as to how many will then be available to the orgiginal 7 'Launch' cities.

GM has created quite the hype around this vehicle and if sales of the Volt in the USA are of any indication, they will not last long on dealers' lots here in Canada.

Our first Volt, scheduled to arrive at our store next week, is Diamond White with black leather interior and has the upgraded NAV and sound system. There aren't too many options available to order with the two main options being the NAV system and the choice between leather or cloth.

We are very excited to have the Chevrolet Volt in our lineup starting next week and each of our sales team has been individually trained on the specs and details of this amazing vehicle.

So close...it's electrifying!

Over the last couple of days our sales team has had the luxury of going to a ride and drive and information session on the all new 2012 Chevrolet Volt. To say that our staff was excited is an understatement.

After years of research and development, and months of hype, General Motors is set to electrify our model lineup.

The all-new Volt, an electric car that also has a gasoline engine to extend its range to about 580 kilometres, is set to arrive in select Canadian markets sometime between the end of August and the end of September.

Seven Canadian markets have been selected for the launch of the Volt. Consumers in Vancouver, Victoria, Toronto, Oshawa, Ottawa-Gatineau, Montreal and Quebec City have been able to order their 2012 Volt models since May and will be the first cities to recieve the Volt.

There is so much to talk about with this car, and the amount of technology that is in this car is exceptional, but it's probably better that we leave the GM sites to explain all that...we're just delighted to let you know that we have three Volt's on order and will be here in October for sale.

Are all Oil Changes the Same??

In this day and age, you can go to the 'quickie lube' on the corner and get your oil changed in 10 minutes and only have to pay $30 for the change. Is that any better or worse than going to a GM dealership and paying $50 for an Oil Change? Well, an independent study done in Metro Vancouver showed that on average, the $30 'quickie lube' repair shops turned out to be an average spend of actually $120!! In other words, you may have intended to spend $30 but with all their 'up selling' you leave spending an average of $100 more!

Don't be fooled by 'mr quickie'...he's no better than the manufactured dealerships; and in fact can be worse!

But that's not what this blog is about...its actually about the OIL itself and the difference between Synthetic Oil VS conventional Oil. Here's a three quick Q & A sampler to get you introduced to Synthetic Oil:

Q. Can I switch from conventional oil to synthetic oil?
A. Yes, you can switch from conventional oil to synthetic oil with no ill effects to your vehicle, as synthetic based oil and conventional oil are fully compatible.

Q. What are the advantages of synthetic oils compared to conventional oils?
A. Synthetic oil provides higher levels of lubrication and engine protection, generally offering better protection at start up, cleaner formulations with less deposit forming viscosity modifiers, more resistance to oxidation, aging of the oil and better protection against heat build up.

Additionally, beginning with our 2011 model year vehicles, GM began recommending oils meet the GM Dexos1 oil performance level for all gasoline engine vehicles.

Q. Are all synthetic oils the same?
A. No they are not. There are good high quality synthetics and there are synthetics that barely meet specifications. Additionally, even when some synthetics have similar base oils, what really separates high quality synthetics from the rest is how the additive package is blended into the base oil.
Additive packages contain special components that are sacrificed to protect your engine and these need to be replenished by changing the oil. The high end synthetic oils aren't exhausted before the oil change is due.

So what does this all mean...it means that if you really want to protect your investment - your vehicle - you'd be better off spending the extra money to upgrade to the synthetic oil change over the conventional oil change. You want your vehicle to last and this is definitely one way to assist in extending the life of your engine.

We know you can get your oil changed anywhere, and that you can get regular oil changes for a pretty inexpensive dollar these days; but just be reminded of that old saying...look after your car and your car will look after you!

When it comes to family travels, keeping your little ones safe is parental priority #1!

Child safety on the move starts with a properly installed car seat; which Transport Canada says can reduce the risk of serious injury or death by over 70%.

Selecting the right car seat for your child is critical. Make sure the seat you pick is the right one for your child's weight and height. Check your provincial legislation for specific laws on car seats to ensure your child is travelling safely and according to the local laws; and always follow the manufacturer's guidelines and vehicle owner's manual for installation.

Here are a few Child Seat Safety Tips:

Rear-facing child seat? Fasten clips properly, ensure there's no more than a finger's worth of slack in the strap at the baby's collarbone, and that the chest clip is flat across the baby's chest at armpit level.

When installing any child seat, be sure to read both the owner's manual from the seat manufacturer and the car itself.

Avoid pre-owned car seats, and check new ones for a Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Sticker (CMVSS).

Know the expiry date of your child's seat (it's stamped on the seat - if you can't find it, check the owner's manual) and replace it when the seat has exceeded it's recommended life span.

If your child outgrows a forward facing seat prematurely, they'll require a booster seat. Make the switch when they weigh at least 40lbs and meet the height guidelines in the booster seat manual.

Spring Maintenance Tips...

Don't underestimate what spring weather can throw at you and your truck.
First sign of spring: robin or pothole? Either way, while you're probably glad to leave the thrills of winter driving behind, it's important not to overlook the fact that spring brings serious driving challenges of its own. Check out the tips below to get you and your GMC in top spring-driving form.

Watch Out on Wet Roads
Spring's rain creates slippery conditions - just as bad as winter's ice and snow - where hydroplaning and skidding are hazards. Slow down on wet roads.

Check Your Tire Treads
The risk of hydroplaning or skidding on wet roads can be greater if your tire treads are worn. If you're changing your winter tires back to all season tires, make sure you check your all season tire treads for wear with a tread depth gauge. Many new tires also have a tread wear indicator - a rubber bar across the tread of the tire - that lets you see the level of wear on your treads. For safe driving, replace worn tires.

Rotate Your Tires
It's important to rotate your tires at regular intervals in order to maintain even tread wear and prolong the life of your tires (which will also save you money!). Talk to your Goodwrench consultant about inspecting for tread wear and scheduling tire rotations.

Get New Wiper Blades
Rain cuts down on visibility. You'll have a clearer view if you replace your wiper blades this spring -blades worn from clearing winter snow and ice can leave a filmy smear on your windshield that is hard to see through and that reflects glare from oncoming headlights at night.

Balance your Wheels
Potholes and aggressive off-road driving can misalign your suspension and put your wheels out of balance. If you're feeling a wheel jiggle or vibration at highway speeds, your wheel rim may be out of balance. Get your wheels balanced for safe spring driving.

Wash Away Winter Salt
Winter's gone, but the salt build-up on your truck isn't. Get rid of it! Wash your truck and spray underneath, using a high-powered hose if you've got one, with special attention to the build-up that's on your axles, wheels, and exhaust pipe - anywhere corrosion can cause damage.

Clear the Air
Cleaning out a winter's worth of take-out coffee cups and junk gets rid of the obvious "gunk" inside your truck. What you can't see are allergens, bacteria, mold and other microscopic elements that can make you sick. Vacuum thoroughly and clean hard surfaces with a rag and disinfectant. If there's a replaceable cabin air filter in your vehicle, change it.

Fill Your Tires
Keep your tires properly inflated to protect your tire and wheel from damage when you hit potholes. Check for the proper psi on the label on the inside of the driver side doorframe.

Pull Over When the Sky Falls
Severe spring rain - and even hail - storms can come out of nowhere. Water quickly accumulates on the road surface and, even with your blades on top speed, visibility can be nil. So pull over. It's safer to wait it out.

Renovation Update

Alright...we are about 'half way' through our renovation, and we just wanted to give you some heads up as to where we are.

Let's start up front in the showroom.

As you can see, we are bringing back the glorious look of the cedar beams - which we painted over about 18 years ago!! The West Coast look will be very evident in the new showroom and we are very excited to see it completed. Everyone that has seen the 'new beams' after they've been sand blasted all asked "why did we paint them in the first place?" To which we really have no answer!

We are now at the stage where we are building up the framing for the new addition to the showroom. These bug steel beams will be the support structure we need to get all that glass in place once we're finished. The expanded showroom will give us enough space to house 12 new Chevrolets, Buicks and GMCs; plus we are able to get all our sales staff offices, financial services managers offices, fleet manager office and our sales manager's offices all onto the same floor. This will make it a lot easier for customers to get around in our showroom.

Our Parts department:

In our attempts to bring 'parts and service' a little closer, we needed to make room for more parts storage on the now, 'backside' of the parts area. As you can see from this photo, we are building up the overhang for where the new parts storage will go. By doing this, we are able to move the parts retail counter over to the service side of the building, allowing parts and service to have the same front entrance and share the same side of the store. Again, by doing this, we make it easier for the customer to deal with their parts and their servicing of their vehicle.

Over to Service:

Kind of a tough picture to 'look at', but this is where we used to have our canopy covering our service drive thru. Now that it's gone, we're making way for a completely enclosed two lane, four vehicle, drive through garage. This way, you drive your car up and in to the garage, and the service advisor will be there right at your door to meet and greet you. This is customer service at its finest! The nice thing about this drive through, is that it will be temperature controlled and will protect you from the west coast elements!

We'll move on to the rest of the property, but spare you the 'boring' pictures as there's not much to look at. However, we've graded most of the back lot and are now paving it. It's only the back part of the lot right now, but we've already opened up a huge amount of space by doing so. We need this extra space for all our customer vehicles while they are in our service department.

The framing for the new Technicians washrooms are completed and the showers are plumbed and basically installed. Speaking of washrooms, the new customer washrooms are now finished and are awaiting a few last minute details before we can open them up.

Things are moving along nicely and everyone is still in good spirits. So thank you to everyone for being so 'well behaved'!

Our grand opening should be sometime in the fall, and we are hoping to coincide our opening with the launch of three very special vehicle introductions (the Chevrolet Sonic, Chevrolet Orlando and the Chevrolet Volt).

Oil Life Monitors - making it easy to remember when to change your oil

Until recently, the question of when to change your oil was usually answered by your local garage, which had a vested interest in servicing your car every 5,000 kms. Your alternative was to crack the owner's manual to see whether you’re driving habits fell into the "severe" or "normal" category. And then you'd let the listed interval be your frequency guide.

But increasingly, the change interval question is being answered by a vehicle's oil life monitoring system, which signals the driver through the instrument panel. This alert usually arrives anywhere between 5,000 and 8,000 kms.

So how does the system know when it's time for a change? Electronic sensors throughout the drive train send information about engine revolutions, temperature and driving time to the car's computer. The data is run through a mathematical algorithm that predicts when the oil will begin to degrade. The light comes on well in advance, giving the owner time to get the car serviced.

Oil life monitoring systems have been around for several decades. They were introduced in General Motors vehicles in the late 1980s and have been phased in slowly. GM is very confident in the accuracy of the system. The average recommendation from the system for GM vehicles is 8,500 kms. For 2010 vehicles, 14 of 35 manufacturers use oil life monitoring systems.

Perhaps the best thing about oil life monitoring systems is that they free car owners from the confusing exercise of slotting themselves in the normal or severe driving schedules listed in the owner's manual. Severe conditions are described differently by various car makers, but some "severe" conditions that they frequently cite are driving in stop-and-go traffic, towing, excessive idling and driving in the mountains.

In many cases, quick-oil-change outlets and dealerships' service departments encourage frequent oil changes by claiming that every driver falls in the severe category. This begs the question: Why have a normal category at all? Oil life monitoring systems put an end to the debate by reacting to how you actually drive.

If your car has an oil life monitoring system, read your owner's manual to get a feel for how it's going to communicate with you. In general, the systems are designed to be easily understood and used. Some systems will display the percentage of oil life left so you can schedule a service visit. The systems factor in plenty of extra time for the driver who procrastinates. For additional motivation, however, some systems will display a negative number to show just how overdue the oil change is.

Camaro Homecoming Event

You may have heard some rumours about an event that’s happening in Oshawa in June and we’re pleased to tell you that they are true!

Chevrolet is going big with a Camaro Homecoming event at the Oshawa Assembly Plant that will attract thousands of enthusiasts from across North America. We wanted to take this opportunity to bring you up to speed on all the activities planned, so that you can plan to participate.

Partnering with the Ontario Camaro Club (OCC), which was kind enough to move its annual Ontario Camaro Nationals event from St. Catharines to Oshawa, Chevrolet will host the Camaro Homecoming Plant Tour and OCC Nationals on June 10-12, 2011.

Yes, they are opening the doors of the Plant! The tour will occur on Friday, June 10, 2011 and will be open to owners (past and present) of Camaros and Firebirds. Tour spots will be filled on a first come, first served basis upon registration. To support the OCC in their fundraising efforts, those who secure a spot on the tour will be asked to contribute $10 which will be donated to the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Ontario. Chevrolet’s first global midsize sedan will provide customers from Shanghai to New York and Sydney to Sao Paulo with expressive design, advanced technologies, ride performance and fuel-efficient powertrains.

“The current Malibu has left an award-winning impression and changed the way people think about Chevrolet. It redefined what an American midsize car could be,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president, Chevrolet Marketing. “This all-new Malibu delivers on the intangibles of today’s Malibu but gives customers even more: more style, fuel efficiency, content and features, craftsmanship, and dynamic capabilities rivaling high-end sedans.”

Expressive and efficient exterior

“The exterior design of the all-new Malibu carries DNA from its sister vehicles, the Camaro and Corvette, to bring a sporty sensibility to the family sedan segment,” said Bryan Nesbitt, executive director for GM exterior design and Chevrolet Brand Champion.

A wider stance, broad shoulders and an integrated rear spoiler bring a new athleticism to Malibu and give it a more aggressive appearance. The new Malibu has a 4.5-inch (114 mm) shorter wheelbase and 62-inch (1,574 mm) front and rear tracks that are more than 2 inches (51 mm) wider than the model it replaces.

Other exterior design cues include Chevrolet’s dual-port grille, projector HID headlamps, larger Chevrolet bow-tie badges front and rear, and new Camaro-inspired LED dual-element tail lamps. The look is complemented by a range of large 17-, 18- and 19-inch wheels.

The new Malibu exterior is anticipated to be SAE-certified as one of the most aerodynamically efficient cars in the segment, with a coefficient of drag (Cd) rating near Chevrolet Volt’s Cd of .280. Because of Malibu’s new shape and design, engineers were able to remove 60 counts of wind drag compared to the model it replaces.

Malibu also has electronically controlled and integrated active aero shutters (select models in North American markets) to improve aerodynamics and enhance fuel economy without sacrificing the exterior design.

Malibu’s active shutter system automatically closes airflow through the lower intake opening when air intake is least needed. When closed, the shutter system enhances aerodynamic performance by redirecting airflow around the front of the vehicle and down the sides, rather than through it. Whether the shutter is open or closed depends on engine coolant temperature and speed – for example, the shutters open when the car is traveling up a hill, pulling a trailer, or in hot city driving; the shutters close at highway speeds when less engine cooling is required.

Roomier, more refined interior

The new Malibu interior was designed to bring an element of sophistication to everyday driving, featuring an all-new dual cockpit design that creates an inviting, roomy and comfortable environment.

The increased width of the new Malibu means a more spacious cabin. Compared to the previous model, it has nearly 4 cubic feet (113 L) of additional interior volume, along with more shoulder and hip room.

The Malibu interior features metallic, chrome or wood accents located around the shifter, surrounding the center stack, around the instrument cluster and on doors and the steering wheel. Soft, ice blue ambient lighting reflects off of and complements chrome accents and ensures even, consistent illumination along the instrument panel and in storage pockets. Ice blue lighting on the center stack dials, exposed ice blue French contrast stitching, soft-touch and textured surfaces, and strategic applications of noise-deadening materials add to Malibu’s interior refinement.

The Malibu also has a number of storage areas, including a radio face that articulates up and down to reveal a six-inch deep storage area behind its seven-inch touch-screen radio display – a U.S. first in a midsize car. Malibu will also offer a full range of the latest infotainment options, including new color radio systems and an available navigation system.

Malibu will include Chevrolet’s new MyLink infotainment package at launch. It builds on the safety and security of OnStar and seamlessly integrates online services like Pandora® internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio®. MyLink integrates wireless connectivity through Bluetooth to enable hands-free use of selected smart phone apps while the device remains safely stowed.

MyLink features a high-resolution, full-color touch screen display designed to manage the number of steps required to complete a task. MyLink also adds stereo audio streaming and wireless control of smart phones, building on the Bluetooth hands-free calling capability already offered in most Chevrolet vehicles.

All-new 2.5L powertrain

The 2013 Malibu features a global lineup of fuel-efficient and powerful four-cylinder engines that complements its European-inspired driving characteristics.

An all-new Ecotec 2.5L dual overhead cam, four-cylinder engine with direct injection leads Malibu’s engine lineup in North America. It is expected to be one of the most efficient of its size in the market. New features include enhanced authority continuously variable valve timing, variable-displacement oil pump and electronic thermostat that save fuel, while delivering V-6-like performance. It is estimated the engine will be SAE-certified at more than 190 horsepower (141 kW) and 180 lb.-ft. of torque (245 Nm). The new engine has noise-reducing features such as a cast exhaust manifold, steel crank, low-noise timing chain and direct mount accessories that contribute to a quiet-cabin experience.

The 2.5L is mated to a Hydra-Matic 6T40 six-speed automatic with features designed to enhance powertrain efficiency. They include changes to clutch controls and hardware that improves shift response and time. These changes enabled engineers to specify higher gearing to improve cruising efficiency while maintaining acceleration performance and driveability.

Driving experience

Safety features

When it comes to safety features, the new Malibu will be one of the best-equipped in the segment. The Malibu will also be pedestrian protection-compliant in all markets where it is sold, and for the first time in North America. Pedestrian protection design in the front of the vehicle reduces the chance of secondary collision between the pedestrian and engine block in car-pedestrian accidents.

The Malibu will also offer these standard and available safety features:
• Dual-stage driver and front passenger air bags
• Driver and front passenger pelvic/thorax side-impact air bags
• Driver and passenger knee air bags
• Roof rail air bags with rollover protection
• Available second-row head/thorax side-impact air bags

45th anniversary camaro

Chevrolet Camaro, America’s most popular sports car, extends its momentum with enhancements for the 2012 model year. Highlights include an improved version of its standard 3.6L direct injection V-6 engine, a new FE4 performance suspension package for SS coupes and several interior and technology improvements, such as a revised instrument panel design, new steering wheel and rear camera system.

The enhancements arrive in time for Camaro’s 45th birthday, which will be celebrated with this summer’s release of the 45th Anniversary Special Edition Camaro. Continuing the tradition of Camaro anniversary models, the 45th Anniversary Special Edition carries all the upgrades for 2012, with additional unique design elements, inside and out.

“The appeal of Camaro design and performance has powered it to the top of its segment,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “For 2012, we’re capitalizing on that momentum with enhancements to Camaro’s performance and comfort.”

Also coming in early 2012 is the high-performance Camaro ZL1, the most technologically advanced car ever developed in its segment.

Class-leading 3.6L V-6 engine

Camaro’s new 3.6L direct injection V-6 – the LFX engine – goes into production this summer. It delivers an SAE-certified 323 horsepower (241 kW) at 6,800 rpm – an increase of 11 horsepower (8 kW) over the 2011 engine, with no compromise in fuel economy.

The LFX delivers the most standard power in the regular sports car segment. It is also 20.5 pounds (9.3 kg) lighter than its predecessor, which promotes a more balanced driving experience. EPA-estimated highway fuel economy for the ’12 Camaro is 30 mpg (2LS model).

Compared to the 3.6L V-6 in 2011 models, the new LFX engine features:

New cylinder head design with integrated exhaust manifold
Improved intake port design and larger intake valves within the cylinder heads
Longer-duration intake camshafts
Composite intake manifold
New fuel pump and isolated fuel rail
New, optimized-flow fuel injectors
Structural front cover and cylinder block enhancements
Stronger and lighter-weight connecting rods
Camshaft cap and throttle body design enhancements.

Direct injection is the key technology enabling the engine’s combination of power and efficiency. It optimizes fuel delivery to the combustion chamber by introducing fuel closer to the combustion chamber. The result is better efficiency in the combustion process leading to increased fuel efficiency at part and full throttle. It also uses a new fuel pump for the direct injection system, along with a new, isolated fuel rail. The new fuel pump is quieter, while the isolated fuel rail further reduces fuel system noise.

FE4 suspension enhances performance

The new FE4 suspension debuts as a performance improvement for the Camaro SS coupe in 2012, focusing on more refined handling.

“Our objective was to create a more precise sport suspension for the SS coupe, with greater road-holding capability,” said Al Oppenheiser, Camaro chief engineer. ”We applied lessons learned from extensive track testing to better refine the suspension geometry for flatter cornering, a more neutral balance during hard turns, and minimized understeer at the limit.”

Elements of the FE4 package include:

Retuned front and rear dampers
New solid front (23 mm) and rear (24 mm) stabilizer bars
Twenty-inch aluminum wheels and P245/45R20 front/P275/40R20 rear tires (SS).

More than just new components, the new FE4 performance suspension incorporates learning from the ongoing development of the high-performance Camaro ZL1. In particular, the suspension geometry has been adjusted, including reshaped stabilizer bars that are repositioned outboard of the shock mounts. This results in more effective body control and more precise response in performance driving.

Interior, exterior and technology updates

The 2012 model year brings appearance, ergonomic and technology upgrades inside for Camaro drivers and passengers. The interior updates include a revised instrument panel appearance, with new instrument graphics and trim, as well as a new steering wheel design and a power lift feature for the front passenger seat. The steering wheel features a fresh new look and ergonomic improvements intended to support performance driving.

Also new for Camaro in 2012 is a Rear Vision Package, which adds a rearview camera system and an auto-dimming mirror to the existing Rear Park Assist feature. The rearview camera system complements the rear parking assist by providing a video display of the area behind the car, with the video image appearing in the car’s inside rearview mirror.

On the exterior for 2012, a new rear spoiler will be added as a standard feature for Camaro; and the taillamps that had been a part of the RS appearance package option are also being made standard. Additionally, a new, body-color “sharkfin” antenna joins the RS package.

Crystal Red Tintcoat replaces Red Jewel as an exterior color.

45th Anniversary package details

Launching this summer, the 45th Anniversary Special Edition commemorates both Camaro’s lineage and its 21st-century revival. Camaro fans will get their first look at the 45th Anniversary Special Edition at the Camaro5 Fest II, April 15 in Arizona. The anniversary package will be offered on Camaro’s top two trim levels (2LT and 2SS) for both coupe and convertible body styles.

The exterior signature of the 45th Anniversary Special Edition is its unique rally stripe, in red and silver, that contrasts the Carbon Flash Metallic paint. The package also includes:

Unique 45th Anniversary hood and deck stripes; badges located beneath the front fender emblems
New-design 20-inch wheels in dark silver
Fog lamp and taillamp bezels finished in dark silver
RS-style taillamp lenses

It has three rows of theatre-style seating, which means there's plenty of space inside for your entire family and a few friends. Or fold down the 2nd and 3rd row seats to make room for almost anything you might pick up along the way. And because Orlando is built on the same compact platform as the Chevrolet Cruze, it not only moves through traffic like a small car — it parks like one too. Now that's balance.

2011 Chevrolet VOLT...getting to know this game changer

We are a few months away now from seeing the first of many Chevrolet Volt electric cars hit our showroom. At this point we only know its coming...ok, we know a little more than that, but exact times and price points are still closely guarded by GM.

In the meantime, here are some frequently asked questions about the car that we'd like to share:

When and where will it be available?
Volt will be available by then end of Q3 2011. Initial launch markets will be Toronto, Ottawa, Oshawa,
Vancouver, Victoria, Montreal, and Quebec City. Subsequent rollout across the country within 12
months. Limited availability in the first Model Year.

What about the battery and vehicle warranty?
The warranty will be similar to what is in place on our 2Mode products. That is, the standard Chevy
warranties will apply (3/60k bumper-to-bumper, etc), but all "Volt-specific" components such as the
battery, hybrid drive train, etc., are warranted for 8yrs/160,000kms. We believe this should offer
sufficient piece of mind regarding the "new technology" parts of the vehicle.

What options and trim are available?
There will be only one trim level offered in Canada. Canadian option content, along with pricing, has not been announced at this time. Available options customers will have:
Cloth vs. Heated Leather seats. Backup Camera, Parking Assist, and Navigation

How much will I save on gas?
This is a calculation that will be specific to each individual’s usage case. However, we do know that the cost per mile to drive electrically is a fraction of what the cost is to drive with gas.

Explain Tax Credits?
There is presently no federal tax credit for EVs in Canada as there is in the US. Some provinces will offer credits. In Ontario, the Volt is expected to qualify for an $8230 provincial incentive, and in Quebec a $7769 incentive. In Ontario, the incentive is a point-of-sale purchase incentive. It is not a tax credit or rebate. Customers will not need to apply, and the entire incentive is applied at point of purchase.

How well will the Volt perform?
It will accelerate from 0-100 km/h in under 9 seconds. The Volt’s electric drive unit delivers the equivalent of 150hp, 273 lb-ft of instant torque and a top speed of 160 km/h.

What kind of battery does it use?
The Volt uses Lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries have a very high energy density and are less likely than most batteries to lose their charge when not being used. Lithium-ion batteries are widely used in electronic devices such as laptop computers. Previous Electric Vehicles and hybrids used Lead Acid and Nickel Metal Hydride batteries, both are heavier and less energy efficient.

If I go a day without driving, does the battery go dead?
No. If you have already fully charged the battery it will retain the charge while it is not in use.

What type of drivers will benefit most by driving a Volt?
A driver who can plug-in on a frequent basis will experience the most petroleum reduction and reduced emissions. Optimal benefits will be achieved by a driver who is able to plug-in before or shortly after the electric range is depleted.

Will the engine charge the battery back up while driving?
No, this is a common misconception with the production intent Volt. When the engine turns on it is providing energy primarily to propel the vehicle. The battery will not be fully charged until the vehicle is plugged into a wall outlet.

Doesn’t regenerative braking charge the battery?
Yes, but it will not fully recharge the battery. If significant charge is built up (long downhill), then it would allow for the engine to turn off for a longer time during range extending mode.

So the engine turns off during range extending mode?
Yes, it will turn on and off similar to a typical hybrid, but not the same. Since the engine is not driving the wheels the engine speed is not directly related to the accelerator input.

Is the Volt complicated to drive?
No. You can drive the Volt just like any other car. The Volt will seamlessly transition from EV Mode (using all electric power) to using the on-board range extender. The driver does not need to do anything. Most drivers find the Volt to offer an extremely smooth, quiet ride.

What happens if I need to drive before the battery is fully charged?
No Worries! A partial charge will provide a reduced portion of the full-charge EV range.

Do I have to plug it in every day?
While the Volt has been designed to be most efficient when it is plugged-in regularly, it will operate fine without being plugged in for days, weeks or even months. The beauty of the Volt is the driver is not tied to a plugging-in routine.

What happens if I NEVER plug it in?
You will simply use more gasoline, but the vehicle’s operation will remain unchanged. You won’t, however, be displacing petroleum and minimizing your cost of operation. The Volt is intended to be plugged in on a regular basis. Prospective customers with no opportunity to plug the vehicle in (no garage or place to charge) should probably consider a different vehicle.

Will my gas get stale if I never use the engine?
No. The 35 litre tank is pressurized so it will stay fresh longer. The Volt will monitor the age of the gas in the tank. If the average age of the fuel is over 365 days the vehicle will remind you to add fresh fuel. Drivers who use very little gas will be encouraged to keep their fuel tank level at a minimum.

A real sneak peak at the new Chevy Colorado

Here it is... the Official images of the Chevrolet Show Truck for the Bangkok International Auto show. The Show truck previews the design of the next generation Colorado pickup, which will go on sale in Thailand later this year.

Trucks have been part of Chevrolet's core for nearly all of it's 100 year history. The Colorado reinforces that heritage with expressive design, refinement and uncompromising capability.

According to GM, the Colorado has been designed specifically for Thailand, with many of the development engineers living in the country for months during development. The show truck is powered by a 2.8 Litre diesel and features all wheel drive.

Although GM has not formally announced the Colorado's availability in global markets, it is expected that this concept is also previewing the next small truck for the North American market as well.

We are being very optimistic that that last statement is true and that we'll see this great design here.

Surviving the price increase of gas...

We seem to go through it every year...the nice weather comes out and the price of gas seems to rise with the rising temperatures. I'm sure that's not really what happens but it sure seems that way.

Here are some quick strategies to help car owners cope with the rise at the pumps...

Figure out the mileage you get in the car you drive now. This will help you see the actual impact of the price increases, measure any improvements you attain by changing your driving patterns and help you decide whether it would make sense to move to a more fuel-efficient vehicle.

Realistically assess what rising gas prices mean to you and your family. The impact might not be as dire as you think. Or, if gas prices do threaten to sink the budget, it might be time to reexamine how your household is spending money overall.

Save fuel by changing your driving style and attending to simple car maintenance. By far, the largest fuel saver was a switch to calm driving. Compared to a fast, lane changing, sharp braking style, calm driving improves fuel economy.

Driving on under inflated tires lowered fuel economy by an average of 3.7%! Make sure your tires are inflated to the specs of the car and or the tire.

Get the big picture on gas prices. Don't be driving all across town only to save a few pennies (you'll burn that driving all over the place!). Look at joining one of the Co-Ops or getting a membership at Costco.

Don't immediately dump your gas guzzling SUV: That instinctive reaction could cost you money! The resale value of an SUV in a gas crisis drops as fast as the price of gas rises and most of the time you can't make up that difference. Plus, the demand for good fuel efficient used cars is on the rise thus increasing their value. Make sure to do your homework if this switch is an absolute necessity.

Don't buy 'gas saving' devices. Most of them don't work.

Most of all, just slow down. It's been proven time and time again that speed is the number one contributor to poor gas mileage. Unless your wife is in labour and you have to high tail it to the hospital, there's no reason why you can't take your time on your next drive.

Hope this helps a little. We all know this is a tough time for everyone, so every little helping 'tip' is like finding gold in them thar hills!!

Chevrolet MyLink - Time to challenge Ford's Sync!

Consumers who seek a higher level of in-vehicle wireless connectivity and customized infotainment options, plus the unmatched safety and security of OnStar need look no further than the 2012 Chevy Volt and Equinox.

When these vehicles go on sale later this year, they will be the first to offer Chevy MyLink – an in-car infotainment package that builds on the safety and security of OnStar and seamlessly integrates online services like Pandora® internet radio and Stitcher SmartRadio® using hands-free voice and touch-screen controls via Bluetooth device connectivity.

“There is a new generation of car buyers who don’t want to settle for mass market radio,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. “They want to create their own individual stations and have access to them wherever they are. Chevrolet vehicles have offered customers the ability to use portable media devices since 2006 and the introduction of MyLink takes media personalization to a new level. ”

MyLink adds stereo audio streaming and wireless control of smartphones, building on the voice-activated Bluetooth hands-free calling capability already offered in most Chevy vehicles. MyLink also includes a seven-inch, high-resolution, full-color touch screen display that makes media selection easy to navigate.

“Chevrolet MyLink is the next logical step for in-vehicle connectivity,” said Karl Stracke, vice president for Global Product Engineering. “MyLink leverages the mobile broadband capability and the sophisticated, online services made possible by today’s smart phones.”

MyLink retains all the capabilities of today’s entertainment units, including AM/FM/XM tuners, CD player with MP3 playback, auxiliary and USB inputs. But, Stracke says, “These are the essentials and we’re building from there.”

Among the new benefits provided by MyLink:
• Enhanced hands-free voice control system powered by Nuance®, which allows simple voice commands to initiate phone calls and select radio stations or media from portable MP3 players and smartphones. A tap of a button on the steering wheel enables intuitive verbal control of smartphone applications like “play (artist name)” or “call (name of contact)” to keep the driver’s hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
• Pandora® internet radio allows users to create personalized radio stations based on favorite artists or genres and Stitcher SmartRadio® enables access to thousands of audio programming choices allowing customers to build a personalized listening experience. MyLink integrates control of both of these apps for a driver directed listening experience.
• Gracenote®: identifies the music collection on the driver’s smartphone or MP3 player and presents information such artist name, genres and album cover art on the MyLink screen and enables users to select similar music to the tunes they love. Gracenote also improves the accuracy of MyLink’s voice activation system by allowing users to access music using artist nicknames, such as “The Boss,” “G.N.R,” or “The Fab Four” simply by using MyLink’s touch-screen or steering wheel buttons and voice control interfaces.
• Upgraded USB connectivity: While Chevrolet has offered auxiliary device connectivity since 2006, MyLink adds flash memory capability to its USB device connections. This provides users with the ability to access approved applications that will make their MyLink system even more functional, while assuring that driver’s maintain eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

The debut of Chevy MyLink extends the OnStar experience from safety and security to information and entertainment by seamlessly integrating the capability of a smartphone into the vehicle so that hand-held phones may be safely stowed while driving.

When OnStar debuted in 1996, it pioneered in-vehicle connectivity with the auto industry’s first embedded telematics system. It has grown from primarily offering automatic crash notification and security features to include remote vehicle diagnostics, turn-by-turn navigation and the ability to slow down stolen vehicles.

In November 2010, OnStar released a smartphone application for all 2011 Chevy vehicles that incorporated remote start, lock/unlock, and vehicle status checks as well as battery management functions for Volt owners. Volt owners also have the MyVolt.com website to provide those remote management features and other Chevy owners soon will have access to similar web-based OnStar services.

The combination of MyLink and OnStar will soon be joined by the integration of the Powermat® charging system – eliminating the need for charging cords. Chevrolet MyLink will be available beginning with the 2012 Chevrolet Volt and Equinox this fall before expanding to other vehicles in the Chevy lineup over the next 18 months.

CBC Play On Street Hockey Challenge

This past weekend we had the pleasure of being the presenting sponsor of CBC Hockey Day in Canada's Play On! Redwood Cup. For most of us, we're asking Redwood Cup??? What the heck is that. Well the Redwood cup is an invitation only street hockey tournament that is held annually in conjunction with CBC Hockey Day in Canada. Play On is Canada's largest sports festival!! Yeah...who knew!

60 teams, both men's and women's compete over two days on the streets of down town Victoria. Portions of both Government St and Belleview St were blocked off for the two day event. At any given moment you could see 5 faced paced games going on at once. The action was amazing...especially knowing that the fans were basically ON the playing surface! The grand prize for the tournament was $20,000 for the men and $3,000 for the women - obviously the money is relative to the number of teams in the tourney with the men's teams more than tripling the number of women's teams.

Victoria was well represented in both divisions with both the men's and women's teams making it all the way to the semi finals. Nothing like a little home 'street' advantage. There was also a 'celebrity' street hockey game that was played before the finals and we were lucky enough to be involved in. Local Celebrities included Triathlete Simon Whitfield, Mayor Dean Fortin, Check TV's Paul Haysom, three members of the Men's 8 rowing team (sorry I forgot your names as I as still amazed at how tall you guys were), and then some other local sponsors' participants.

Despite the rain...wait, it wasn't just rain it was POURING rain for the games on Saturday, the event was a great success. Many of the spectators and players didn't even know it was raining while the games were going on. Lots of smiles and lots of cheers are a great way to get past ol' mother nature.

Thanks again to the organizers at Play ON! and all the players for a great weekend. There really is nothing better than getting a bunch of people together for a game of street hockey.

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 debuted today at the Chicago Auto Show. It is the highest-performing Camaro and the most technically advanced car ever developed in its class. The new ZL1 continues the momentum of Camaro, propelling it into an entirely new realm of leading-edge performance technology. It is planned to launch at the beginning of 2012.

Motivated by a supercharged V-8 engine producing an estimated 550 horsepower (410 kW), the Camaro ZL1 will be the fastest Camaro ever offered by Chevrolet. And more than just power, the ZL1 features technologically advanced and highly developed chassis and suspension systems that help it deliver balanced, track-ready handling and braking power to complement its high engine output. Rigorous development of the ZL1 is ongoing, and official estimates of the car’s capabilities will be released later in 2011, as testing nears completion.

“Camaro ZL1 is about high-tech performance and design, and is a type of car no one has ever brought to this segment previously,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet marketing. “It’s the most technically advanced Camaro ever, so we’ve chosen a name from the most elite and exclusive Camaro in history.”

The ZL1 name is derived from the all-aluminum racing engine of the same name, which was developed in the late 1960s and installed into a handful of regular-production 1969 Camaros. Only 69 were built with the engine, but they’ve achieved mythical status among enthusiasts, as they represented the pinnacle in Camaro performance – until now. The 2012 ZL1 model is designed to be a major leap forward for the Camaro, bringing a new level of performance capability to the segment.

The central goal of the car’s development was creating something new – a Camaro intended to reach optimal lap times on top road-racing circuits and excellent driving dynamics on the street. To achieve that goal, engineers evolved many of the existing Camaro’s systems, as well as incorporated new technologies such as electric power steering and Magnetic Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension system.

Camaro ZL1’s design communicates and supports its performance mission. Rather than using decorative elements, ZL1 is visually differentiated from other current Camaro models with elements vital to the car’s elevated capabilities.

“Everything about the ZL1’s design is directly related to its technology and serious performance, especially aerodynamics,” said Ed Welburn, vice president, Global Design. “Our designers’ goal was to execute that function-oriented design with beautifully sculpted forms, creating an imposing, powerful persona. Function becomes the aesthetic. The intent is a car that delivers on the attitude it projects.”

Major elements of the ZL1’s design are a new front fascia and hood with air extractors, designed in tandem to create aerodynamic downforce to aid handling. The car’s hood includes a signature center section constructed of carbon fiber and rendered in satin black finish. New rocker panels, wide tires, 20-inch wheels and exhaust tips portray the car’s handling and power.
The ZL1 badge appears on the grille, hood and the brake calipers, all key areas portraying the technology within.

Tech overview

Supporting the dynamic track and street performance of the ZL1 is the LSA 6.2L supercharged engine, which will produce an estimated 550 horsepower (410kW) and 550 lb.-ft. of torque (677 Nm), with specific features for the Camaro. Built on GM’s legendary all-aluminum, small-block V-8 architecture, the LSA features an intercooled supercharger system, premium heat-resistant aluminum-alloy cylinder heads and other details designed to ensure its exceptional performance is delivered with smoothness and refinement. Components and design elements that contribute to the LSA’s performance include:

* Balanced, lightweight reciprocating assembly
* High-strength hypereutectic pistons
* Sixth-generation Eaton supercharger with four-lobe rotors
* Piston oil squirters.

Because the Camaro ZL1 uses electric power steering, the engine does not incorporate a conventional hydraulic power steering pump on its accessory drive system. This enhances performance, because no engine power is used to turn a steering pump pulley.

Camaro ZL1 is a complete high-performance car, not just a Camaro with more power. Key technical highlights include:

Transmission – The high-performance Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual is matched with the LSA engine. It is the “MG9” version of the transmission, with a higher torque capacity. It is used with a dual-mass flywheel and twin-disc clutch for easy operation and shift smoothness. A new, shorter-throw shifter actuates the gear changes.

Exhaust – ZL1 is equipped with a dual-mode exhaust system, which alters the sound level and character in response to engine rpm. First used on the legendary Corvette, and specifically tuned for Camaro ZL1, the dual-mode exhaust will give the car a signature sound.

Drivetrain – It is revised with a stronger driveshaft and rear axle system, featuring a larger and stronger cast iron differential housing, stronger axles and heavy-duty limited-slip differential. This patent-pending system is designed to ensure that ZL1’s tremendous power is delivered smoothly to the ground.

Suspension – The suspension features completely revised tuning and the inclusion of segment-exclusive Magnetic Ride Control. ZL1’s Magnetic Ride system will include driver selectable modes (Tour and Sport) tailored for the preferred style of driving. It uses advanced magneto-rheological science to produce shock damping with the highest level of precision, enabling body control optimized for excellent performance in everyday driving as well as track situations. This technology appears on only a small roster of some of the world’s finest performance cars. Other chassis elements are redesigned to support the car’s high-performance limits. Rear stabilizer bars have drop links repositioned outboard of the control arms. This makes the bars more effective in controlling body roll in turns, with crisp response to driver commands.

As of this posting, we do not have ordering details or timelines for here in Canada; but be sure that as soon as we do, you'll hear about it!

Brakes and Steering – Camaro ZL1 features an advanced track-capable braking system, developed in conjunction with experts from Brembo. The large 14.6-inch (370 mm) two-piece front rotors have six-piston calipers; the 14.4-inch (365 mm) rear rotors have four-piston calipers. ZL1 marks the entry of a new electric power steering system to Camaro. It is being developed to ensure precise control and feedback to the driver, with greater variability of effort for high-performance driving.

Exterior – ZL1’s signature from the front is the redesigned fascia and aluminum hood with a raised, carbon fiber insert. The fascia includes a front splitter and new vertical fog lamps. The fog lamp area includes air intakes designed for brake cooling. The hood features front-mounted air extractors that direct air precisely over the car. Visually, this center section, in satin black carbon fiber, communicates the car’s high-performance intent as a visual contrast to the car’s exterior color. Functionally, the air extractor is a key in connecting airflow closely to the bodywork, creating aerodynamic downforce. The carbon fiber center section reduces the mass of the hood. High-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps and fog lamps are standard. The rear of the car includes a diffuser and spoiler, also functional elements that enhance the car’s aerodynamics.

Wheels and Tires – New-design, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, which are lighter than the 20-inch wheels used on the Camaro SS, are used with new Goodyear Supercar F2 ties developed specifically for the ZL1.

Interior – ZL1 is tailored for high-performance driving. The front seats feature microfiber suede inserts. Other enhancements include a redesigned steering wheel, alloy pedals, Head-Up Display with unique performance readouts and the “four-pack” auxiliary gauge system featuring a boost readout.

Production details

All of the Camaro exterior colors will be offered with the ZL1, but black is the only interior color. The unique exterior features are complemented with a black center section on the hood. Inside, the Camaro ZL1 has heated leather seats with microfiber inserts and ZL1 logos embroidered on the front headrests. Microfiber suede is repeated as an accent on the instrument panel, adding a richer look to the interior. The ZL1 will include the same content as the current 2SS package and include the following new or unique features:

* Six-way power driver and passenger seats
* Unique instrument panel and door panel inserts; and ZL1-logo sill plates
* Steering wheel audio controls with Bluetooth capability
* Wireless PDIM and USB-port
* Boston Acoustics premium audio system
* Rear parking assist
* Rear camera system (displayed in the inside rearview mirror).

Engineers have already driven Camaro ZL1 prototypes extensively at demanding road courses in the U.S. and Germany, with final testing being completed through the balance of 2011

Destruction...construction...then rebirth

You know that old term, 'short term pain for long term gain'...well we are certainly going through that right now.

We are well under way of our renovations and so far, we've only experienced minor twinges of pain. Most of the renos have focused on the inner walls of our service and parts departments; so to the naked eye, it doesn't look like much is going on. Nothing could be further from the truth.

From an employees stand point, there are now walls where doors used to be, holes in the floor where stairs used to be, and lots of extra bodies walking around hammering and cutting and cleaning up their work.

Here are a few pictures from the inside to see the changes...it may not mean much, but you'll soon see the benefits.

We are first attacking our service areas so that our most frequent of customers are looked after immediately. Enclosing the service drive, expanding the 'pro shop' of accessories and modernizing the customer lounge are the three high priority items that are first on the list. From new couches to WiFi, business stations and a kids art table, we're attempting to make your time spent here a more enjoyable one.

The noise hasn't been that bad, the dust is kept to a minimum, and all the extra labourers have been very enthusiastic about the job they are doing. In other words, the real 'pain' is yet to come when the walls of the showroom get 'blown out'!

Here comes the excitement...

Remember that old song from Timbuk 3...The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades? Yeah, I know...who the heck is Timbuk 3??? Another one hit wonder for sure... anyways, that looks like the theme song for us in 2011.

You've already seen some of the photos and updates regarding our renovations to our dealership to bring you a bigger and better Jenner (keep following on our Facebook page)...so that's the first bit of bright news.

Plus, you know it's our 30th Anniversary of selling and servicing Chevrolets, Buicks and GMC's here in the Victoria Community...by the way, we couldn't have done that without our fantastic people.

So we've got the 'place' taken care of, and we still have the 'people' to look after you, all that's missing is the 'product'. Well, after seeing what's happening at the North American International Autoshow, it's looking VERY positive in that area as well.

Here's a quick rundown in case you missed it...

The Chevrolet Volt was named the 2011 North American Car of the Year (beating out the Nissan Leaf and the Hyundai Sonata). Already winner of Motor Trend Magazine's Car of the Year and the Green Car of the Year, the Chevy Volt is already turning heads and it's just now arriving to customers in the USofA. Canadians can expect the car mid to late summer in select cities...one of which is Victoria!

The long awaited compact Luxury Car from Buick, the 2012 Buick Verano, was shown to the public with much fan fare. The Verano, basically a 'Baby LaCrosse', will be Buicks' third new vehicle in two years; following in the shoes of the LaCrosse and the Regal. Based on the Opel Astra with several major tweaks, the Verano will be Buick's first major attempt at the Compact Luxury Segment. Expect more details soon and then plan to see the vehicle in our showrooms by the end of the 2011 calendar year.

Yeah, this is the 'Z-Spec' Version, but you get the idea of the new Chevy Sonic. It replaces the outgoing Chevrolet Aveo, and grows up doing it. The Aveo has its last production run coming this spring, and the Sonic will follow right after hitting our showrooms in the early summer. The Sonic will come in both the Hatchback and Sedan versions, but as for the Z-spec, we'll have to wait and see. Sonic, as we said, is bigger than the current Aveo inside and out, will produce more horsepower and more importantly get better fuel economy; plus the fit and finish will be greatly improved.

And finally, the 2011 Camaro Convertible. We've known about it, we've read about it and I'm sure a few of us have dreamed about it; well, it's in production now and will be in our showroom within a months time. Good thing we live on the west coast and convertible season starts in March! The Camaro coupe was a hit when it launched as a 2010 and the convertible will be just as an amazing launch as the coupe...what's next? Rumors of the return of the Z/28!!! We can only hope.

We also saw lots of other concepts and ideas, but we know the four above are definitely hitting our showrooms this year.

So, get your shades ready 'cause 2011 is going to be a very bright year for all of us here at Jenner. But the real winners are going to be you...the ones that get to drive all these amazing vehicles from Chevrolet, Buick and GMC.

The Renovation

Well, it's started...

Not only is 2011 a monumental year for us because it's our 30th Anniversary, but it marks the beginning of a major renovation to our store.

For the next eight to nine months, we will be jack hammering, nailing, cutting, painting and all the other little things that are included in a renovation. Just think of how many times you've either renoed your kitchen or painted your kids room, and how much fun that was! Well, we're not kidding ourselves into believing that this will be easy; we know it's going to be a pain and not only for ourselves, but for you the customers.

We'll apologize now for any inconveniences we are creating with this reno, as there will be lots of noise and dust and things 'out of place' when you come and visit. But just think to how amazing that kitchen looked when it was finished; or how big a smile was on your kid's face when they saw their newly painted room. Jenner Chevrolet Buick GMC 2.0 WILL be amazing and it will put a lot of smiling faces on our employees and our customers.

Here's are the 4 main areas that we are focusing on for a better customer experience:

We are moving our Parts Department to the other side of the building and pairing it up with the Service Department. This will give us ONE BIG area for both parts and service.

We are enclosing our service drive thru to give you the comfort of an enclosed, temperature controlled area to drop off your vehicle and to have our service advisors right out there next to you and your vehicle waiting to assist you.

Our showroom is expanding to allow another 5 vehicles and all of our sales offices, financial offices and fleet office to be all on the same level. This expanded showroom will also feature two all new 'portal' entrances that will show off both Chevrolet and Buick/GMC franchises.

Our entire lot is being redesigned for better traffic flow, parking and display of our vehicles. This new landscape will also feature a unique display of our product right up against the Island Highway - the secret will be revealed in the near future.

So as you can see, this will be a tremendous undertaking and will have many benefits when completed. As we like to say, some short term pain for a long term gain! This renovation also gives you the consumer confidence that we at Jenner aren't going anywhere; and that we plan to stay in your community for a long time supporting you and your families.

2011 Silverado HD - Motor Trend's Truck of the Year

In the Heavy duty truck world, capability is most important. People like to brag about numbers...horsepower, torque, and payload and towing capacity... and talk about the monstrous things they can tow. Take for example, the Chevrolet Silverado HD's 21,700 pound towing capacity. That means it can tow three other Silverado HD's or 10 Lotus Evoras. Payload capacity in this category mean that each truck is rated to carry a half ton pickup in its bed, if you crushed it small enough to fit. These are the trucks that haul horse trailers, massive boats, and huge construction equipment; the ones many people pooh pooh as being too big and too environmentally unfriendly... until they need to use one, of course. Styling isn't nearly as important in this category, so when the Great Recession of 2009 hit and GM's development budget was cut, it prioritized function over form.

The new Silverado HD received a new hood, front bumper and grille, plus optional 20" wheels, but that's about it on the styling side. The engineers focused more on three key attributes: powertrain, frame and suspension. Improving that trio would provide more power with greatly emissions, increased capability, and better ride and reduced noice levels in the cabin. The stronger and more comfortable Silverado HD was ready to take on its new for 2011 foes.

For Motor Trend's 2011 Truck of the Year, they evaluated two Silverado HDs, one extended cab gas single rear wheel and the other a crew cab dually diesel. The editors had the chance to drive these two Silverado HDs, two Ford Super Duties and two GMC Sierra HDs back to back, to compare apples to apples gas and diesel models. They were all tested with and without payload, on highway straights and twisty roads, and with and without trailers.

All the MT staff who drove the Silverado HDs immediately noticed what the engineers changed for 2011, as well as what they left alone. Chevrolet developed new fully boxed frames for the HDs, plus there are more cross members, and the front frame segments are hydro formed. As a result, bending, torsional, and beaming stiffness were dramatically increased; vibrations were reduced and ride and handling were improved.

The majority of pick up trucks these days rarely see any 'off road' use. For the most part their every day life is spent on the pavement of suburbia hauling around families and the odd trip to the local Home Depot.

But that wasn't what pick up trucks were originally designed for.

MUD...SAND...SNOW...BACKCOUNTRY...AND JUST PLAIN OLD HAVING FUN AND GETTIN' DIRTY DOING IT!

That's what a real pick up truck does.

Well, GM has just unveiled the GMC Sierra All Terrain HD (concept), giving us a preview and potential response to the Ford F-150 Raptor. The GMC All Terrain offers heavy duty capability along with off road prowess.

The Seirra All Terrain concept rides on a modified production 4x4 chassis with the familiar Duramax Diesel and Allison transmission. The vehicle rides higher and features a wider track. This along with its improved suspension gives it great off road capability without sacrificing it's heavy duty intentions.

The Sierra All Terrain HD comes in a five foot eight inch crew cab short box body and is shorts overall in length compared to the current production 2011 Sierra HD. The truck track is 73 inches which adds stability, three more inches in ground clearance, specially constructed Fox off road shocks with remote fluid reservoirs, front and rear jounce shocks, 35 inch tires, full composite under body protection and other features to help the truck navigate around the rough terrain.

The Sierra HD concept sports an assortment of LED lighting. The headlights feature high intensity LED headlamps, LED tail lamps, LED fog lamps, high intensity park and turn signal lamps and LED flood lights for the cargo bed and assist steps.

Under the hood lies the same 6.6L Duramax Diesel producing 397 HP and 765 lb-ft of torque and the six speed Allison Transmission. Estimated payload capacity is 2,700 lbs. towing is estimated to be around 13,000 lbs for conventional towing and 15,600 lbs for fifth wheel towing.

Still a concept, the vehicle will be unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show in January and sure to be one of the highlights for GM.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that there's a 'green' light at the end of this tunnel and we soon see something like this in our showrooms in the near future.

The 2012 Chevrolet Sonic

Arriving sometime in mid to late Summer of 2011, the all new Chevrolet Sonic will hit dealership lots with 'a BOOM'!!! Yeah corny, I know, but it had to be said.

2011 is the last year for the Chevrolet Aveo compact car, and it's replacement is the all new, and bigger Sonic.

Chevrolet has and is going through a major restructuring of is car line up...first it was the Malibu, then Camaro; then the Cobalt was replaced with the Cruze. Both the new Malibu and Cruze were major steps up in fit and finish to its predecessors; and both actually grew in size. With the departure of the Aveo, the larger Sonic will almost fill the gap where the Cobalt left off. And moreso, leaves room for the upcoming Chevrolet Spark 'micro' car coming in 2012.

More details are on the way so stay tuned.

Yesterday marked an important day for Volt as Chevrolet delivered on a promise made three years ago – to design, build and sell the world’s first electric vehicle with extended-range capability. GM CEO Dan Akerson commemorated the first Volt deliveries to US dealers at the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Centre – the home of the Volt.

To capitalize on increased consumer and media interest in Volt, GM Canada is pleased to announce additional information on our Canadian launch plans.

To ensure a high quality launch, initial production volumes will be limited. As a result, Chevrolet is bringing Volt to market using a phased approach. Accordingly, initial production will be targeted to select US cities. Additional markets will added as production increases. Accordingly, GM Canada will receive its initial units as 2012 model year production next Summer.

Winter Driving Tips

The snow is here...and it looks like it will be here for a while. So much for a typical west coast winter!

Driving skills are pushed to the limit. Do you know hot to drive properly in bad conditions? A few moments of thinking about it now could save you from problems when you are out on the road.

Maintain a safe following distance:
It takes longer to stop on a slippery road. Look ahead and keep plenty of distance between you and other cars. Be especially careful when approaching hills. Make sure the car ahead of you has made it all the way up the steep hill before you follow behind - you never know when they might start slipping backwards.

Drop your speed to match road conditions:
The posted speed is the maximum speed under ideal conditions. In winter, it is safer to drive below the speed limit. No matter how much experience you have, the way your car will move on snow or ice always has an element of surprise.

Watch for black ice:
Slow down when approaching shaded areas, bridges and overpasses as these sections of road freeze sooner than others in cold weather. Watch for 'Black Ice', a thin coating of ice, which is almost invisible but very hazardous. It can cause your vehicle to suddenly lose traction, braking and cornering control.

Accelerate and brake slowly:
When starting from a stop on slick roads, start slowly and accelerate gradually to maintain traction and avoid spinning your wheels. If you have a manual transmission, try starting off in second gear. If you have an auto, do the same buy moving your shifter to either 'L' or '2'. When stopping, plan well in advance, apply the brakes gently and slowly apply pressure rather than braking suddenly. Many cars today have Anti Lock Braking (ABS) and when you brake you will sometimes hear your brakes 'chatter'. Don't be afraid, just release a little pressure off your brakes giving the wheels a little more traction back. If you don't have ABS, you must remember to do the pumping of the brakes yourself, otherwise your brakes will 'lock' up and you'll just keep sliding in a straight line.

Avoid sudden moves:
Slow down and steer smoothly and gradually to avoid skidding. Accelerate gently, turn slowly and brake carefully and early. Avoid unexpected quick movements that could put you in a spin. Anticipate turns, stops, and lane changes well before they occur.

Know how to handle a skid:
A skid happens when your wheels slide out of control on a slipper surface and is a result of driving too fast for road conditions. If you start to skid, ease off the brake or accelerator, look and steer smoothly in the direction you want to go. Be careful not to over steer (turn too far the other way). If you are on ice and skidding in a straight line, step on the clutch or shift to neutral until you get traction again, then put the car back into gear.

See and be seen:
It is critical for drivers to see and be seen in low light conditions, and when blowing snow impairs visibility. Always drive with your headlight and taillights on.

Make sure your car is winter ready:
You can prepare yourself as much as you can for the snowy conditions, but if you don't have the proper tires or a properly tuned up vehicle you could still be in a lot of trouble. Make sure you have snow tires or chains. Many of the accidents caused today are because of improper tires on vehicles. It really is amazing the difference between winter tires and the 'stock' tires your car comes with. Don't forget wiper blades and washer fluid. Simple items that will impare your visibility at the most inopportune moment.

Four wheel drive is NOT four wheel stop:
This is the final driving tip we can share and it's one that many people seem to forget. Just because you have a 4x4 or an All wheel Drive (AWD) vehicle doesn't necessarily mean you have a safer vehicle. Yes, it does give you more traction on show, but it does you NO GOOD on ice. Ice is ice and usually, the heavier your vehicle is, the worse it is on ice in trying to stop it. So use common sense when you are driving in your big 4x4 truck.

Be careful out there. Prepare yourself by leaving a little earlier than you normally would. Make sure you pack gloves, toques, boots, and blankets in the car in case something does happen.

Buick is Back! The Regal GS

It's a hot looking Euro style sport sedan that ticks all the right boxes. A high output turbo four with 255 horsepower and 295 LB FT of torque, a Haldex all wheel drive system that can funnel up to 85% of the torque to the rear wheels and a six speed manual transmission. It rolls on 20" alloy wheels and has Brembo brakes. Claimed 0 - 100kms in under 6.0 seconds!

No, it's not a BMW, Lexus or Audi...it's a BUICK! And it's not just a 'show car', it's production ready!

The Buick GS' Interactive Driver Control System (IDCS), for example, is an evolution of the system that will be available in the regular 2.0L Turbo. Chief engineer for the Regal Jim Ferico says, "We're going to take the electrons to the limit." In it's sportiest mode, the GS' IDCS firms up the steering, remaps the throttle, stiffens the shocks, shunts more torque to the rear wheels, changes the limited slip differential settings and reprograms the stability control to allow more tailout limit driving.

Officially, the Regal GS is a concept car. But according to GM North America president Mark Reuss if there was any logical reason why GM would NOT put the GS into production he simply states, "NO. It's what Buick performance should be - very sophisticated."

Buick product marketing manager Craig Bierey echos Reuss' sentiments, "Is there a logical reason why I wouldn't do the car? NO. But we want to see what the reaction to is it first. We want to walk before we run." But before Bierley's mild caution is interpreted as an echo of old-school GM conservatism kicking in, he adds, "The dealers saw the car last October. They were drooling!"

No wonder...it is a no brainer.
